Here to help you find your Sanilac County Genealogy and Local History

Hello Everyone,

I will start by saying I am very excited to be able to have this web site online to help you with your Sanilac County, Michigan Genealogy and Local History questions.

I hope I can help all of you but please know I may not be able to at times, so I will try and find you the best place or persons that are out there that may be able to be of help to you.

Just post a question or comment, I have given you instruction on just how to post to this web site. Just look on the right side of this page, just under my picture for instructions.

If you are familiar with Posting just click on the words, "Comments and Questions" that are right under this Post.

The more people that post questions or comments the better we will be able to help each other. Just in case I can not help you maybe someone out there will have the answers for you or you can help others.

All I ask is that you give me as much information that you know. So please remember I am a librarian who love genealogy so I love to dig and find out all I can for you.

I am looking forward to helping all of you.

Thank you,

Kathy Wedyke

Three of us are looking for both sets of parents' names, etc of William Roberts, b.1817 in Wales, Died 1908, buried in Pt.Sanilac. His wife: Nancy Sweet Roberts, b.1817 in Cobourg, Ontario, CA, d.1904, buried in Pt.Sanilac. Her parents we suspect are from NY. We have run into a brick wall and cannot go further back than this. Are you able to find anything further for us, please? We haven't viewed either death certificates-due to other issues. Do you have access to them? Any help that you could lend to our search would be GREATLY appreciated! thank you

My volunteer is coming back maybe next week so she will be going to the courthouse. She has some before you but I have printed your request and will be giving it to here when she comes back.

Thanks,

hunting for info on Elizabeth {Libbie} Mathews who married a herhold in 1876 in jackson michigan.....i believe her mother may have been Lillian. I am told she may have been living in Thumb, michigan with her parents.....i would like to know her parents full name....thank you she was my great grandmother.

Kathy Wedyke, Library Director said...

Hello,

I looked to see if I could find a Lillian Mathews/Matthews in our cemetery records but I did not find any. I saw Elizabeth, her husband and children in the 1900 Ohio census (did you find them in any census?. I found them on the new FamilySearchLabs site. It said Elizabeth was married to a Rudolph Herhold. Now it says there that one of their children was born in Michigan in 1880 and the others where born in Ohio. I was hoping to find more about them in our area but I have not found anything yet. Sorry.

Hi Ron,

I found a few things about some of your Donaghy's.

In the 1906 Atlas of Sanilac County I found a little Bio on Robert Donaghy here is what it said.

"Robert H. Donaghy, Farmer and Stockraiser, S. & T. P.O. McGregor. Born in Ontario, Canada, in 1858 and in 1889 settled in Sanilc County. Married to Miss A. Mason.

I found the following in the Cemetery record Index of the following Donaghy's that are in this index.

I found marriage record for a Russel Donaghy and Frances Bice that my volunteer can get for you if you do not have this? Now my volunteer is a Farmer and was gone all summer and part of the Fall so she is very behind but will do the lookup for you as long as you are not in any hurry.

I will put up more if I find more tomorrow when I get to the library.

Ron, I think the John R. in the cemetery records index information I gave you before is a John R. in the marriage records book I have. It said he was married to a Verda Luella Coleman and she is also in the cemetery records index.

I will have my volunteer get that record also and see if his parents are Robert and Agnes. It said in the bio I found that Robert married someone named A. Mason so maybe the A is Agnes in the cemetery records index.

Looking for any Spencer buried between 1830-1900. I find more buried after those dates but only found one buried in Cass City around those dates. If you know of any in your county that would be great. TerraGraves7@yahoo.com if you have info.

Hello, All your ancestors are in our cemetery records index and I will send them to you by email. I am still trying to find something about Hiram but nothing so far except the cemetery record.

What I am going to do is give this information to my volunteer who goes to the courthouse for me. She can do a death record lookup for you and see what she can find.

Now we do many lookups so she is very behind and as long as you are in no hurry she will put you on her list. It is a very long list just to make sure you know. :)

Hope we will be of some help.

This is in response to the person who was asking about William Roberts and Nancy Sweet. I believe Nancy Sweet's parents may have been Jared Lewis Sweet and Martha Purdy.

If interested, I located an 1851 Census record for Haldimand Township, Northumberland County, Ontario that includes William Roberts and Nancy along with several children.

Is there an index of obituaries for 1980. I would like to have the obituary and/or death record informationfor Harrison Bradley who died April 1980.

Kathy Wedyke, Retired Library Director said...

Hello,

I can have my volunteer see if she can find an obit for you as long as you are in no hurry? My volunteer cannot do any look ups until after March due to Tax season.

Now if I go to the library before then I will see if I can find it in our local paper but it may not be in the local paper. It may be in the county paper and my volunteer will have to do that look up for you.

Thanks,

I will do a little more digging and if you are in no hurry I can do a death record lookup for you? There are many ahead of you but if you can wait I can do that lookup for you?

I am Wm. H. Weston , Gr. Grandson of Thomas Weston and Sarah (Saunders) Weston who lived and farmed in Fremont township , Sanilac county between 1860 and 1880. Sarah was the daughter of John and Margaret (Castor) Saunders who migrated from Alegheny county Pa. to Sanilac county and the Saunders also farmed in Fremont township . The 1870 census shows both families in numerical order , leading me to believe they had adjoining land. Both families had many children who attended school in the county.
I lost track of John Saunders after the 1870 census and my Westons moved to Wells tonnship , Tuscola county shortly after the great fire of 1881.
John Saunders was born in county Carlo , Ireland . The 1860 census shows John being 53 yrs. , Margaret 48 and Children , James 21 , Amelia 18 ,Elizabeth 14 , --?-- 12 , Margaret 5 ,and Esther 8 mos. A daughter , Jerusha , married Jason Clark , of brockway on Feb. 22 , 1858 at Lakeport . Witnesses were James and Eunice Saunders and the minister was J.B. Whitney . Jerusha died May 27 ,1913 at Lancing , Morgan , Tenn. and is buried in Burrville , Tenn. .

Thomas and Sarah were probably married in Sanilac county , but I have been unsuccessful in finding the record . Their children were George , James ,Frank ,John , William ( My Grandfather ), Celesta , Cora(?) , Edward , and Hubert . Soon after the fire of 1881 the Westons moved to Yale and about 3 years later migrated to Tuscola county .

I have read several accounts of these fires and the devastation caused and I am interested in how theses event may have affected these families .

can you recommend research material that contains in depth details such as who died and who was injured . Also who supplied aid to the people who suffered and what may have become of them afterward ?

Also , will you recommend a researcher that I might hire to locate the marriage record of Thomas and Sarah . I have a little more information on these families if it would be of help or of interest to the Sanilac Geneology Society.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and thanks for a really helpful and most interesting web site.

Bill Weston ,
Petoskey , MI

Hi Bob,

I was able to get to the courthouse and looked in the Death Index and found a William Swinson. I had a lot of lookups to do and did not have time to look for his death record. Would you like a death lookup for Noel when I go back in a few weeks?

Kathy Wedyke, Retired Lib. Dir. said...

Hi Bill,

I did some checking in the Marriage Index I have here at home but could not find Thomas or Sarah. I did find a James, Frank, William and John Weston in the Marriage Index. Was your dad married in Sanilac County? Now a Frank married a Cora but I did not find any of the girls in the Marriage Index. I can take a look when I go in a few weeks to the courthouse to see if these are your Westons.

Now I will do some looking in some of the Sanilac County Historical books at the library to see if I can find any information about the fires and see if the Westons or Saunders are mentioned.

There are some great books about the fires but the ones I have read did not mentions victims. I do know that one of the older Sanilac County History books have some so I will look in them.

My favorite book is the Fiery Trial by Donahue about the fire but it has been a long time since I read it and I do not think it mentioned any names.

Just wanted to mention that Petoskey is one of my favorite cities in Michigan. I had to take some classes there to become Library Director and had a great time there. I have searched and search and never found a Petoskey stone. People have giving me one but that is not the same thing. I want to find on my own. :)

I will get back with you as soon as I get to the courthouse and library and may be in a few weeks.

Thanks,

Kathy,

I found information regarding Jay Humphrey's death date, his obituary in Marlette Leader Newspaper does not give an exact date of his death. I do know that his died sometime in May of 1890. It does not however give the name of the cemetery he is buried in, just says that he was taken to Brown City for burial. If Sharon would like the information from his obituary please have her email me at angel_ofa_face@yahoo.com. I also have James Lambert's obit as well from the Marlette Leader Newspaper.

Offering to do obituary lookups in Marlette Leader Newspaper dating from 1880 to present. I am currently working on the Marlette Leader Newspaper Obituary Index. Not all years are mircofilmed, currently I do know that 1912, 1913, 1920 and 1948 are missing. Being that Marlette Township was on the border of both Lapeer and Tuscola Counties, there are obits from those surrounding areas. Feel free to email me at angel_ofa_face@yahoo.com.

Culhane-Wiltfong. Looking for the marriage of James Culhane (1844, Ireland) to Rachel Wiltfong (30 Jul 1845, Canada) in Sanilac County. I find Rachel's brother David Wiltfong (1854, Canada) and his wife Sophia Schroeder (1861, Prussia) here, also who I believe to be her parents; John and Eliza Wiltfong in the 1870 census. James and Rachel's first child, Ellen Elizabeth Culhane, was born 3 Feb 1868 in New River, Huron, Michigan. So their marriage is sometime before that. Also if there are any siblings and parents that can be found for James Culhane.

They had only one child that we know of, Margaret Ida Drader b. 1925 in Marlette, Mi. I'm guessing that they lived in Marlette until the 1930's where they lived in macomb county (1930 census.) I have been looking for a marriage license for her and any other info there is. Janet arrived in Detroit in Oct. 1922 via Windsor, Canada. I have the Border Crossings document. Hi Mary,

I have the Sanilac County Cemetery Index and this is what I found.

San| PortSanilac| Roberts| Nancy A| /1817 | /1904 | mother

San| PortSanilac| Roberts| William /1817|1908| father

Now how to read this is San=Sanilac Township, Port Sanilac=Port Sanilac Cemetery, of course name, birth, death, mother or father=what is on stone.

Now the only William I found in Mt. Zion was 5 when he died.

So the only Nancy and William are in Port Sanilac Cemetery.

I can look for death records on May 27, to see what I can find.

Maybe we are getting closer.

Hi Kathy,
I read that you are caring for your father, hoping he is well. Unfortunately I don't know the time frame. If you are away now I apologize for taking up your time.

And if anyone else can help with this I would appreciate any info regarding the following family.

Am trying to find the names of William Rowe's parents and possibly a burial location. Hoping his death cert circa 1900 in Elk may contain more information.

farmer William Rowe and wife Catherine Nelmes of Elk. Both were born Ontario Canada and arrived 1871 or 1881. I have them on various census.

Their children were Annie, Wm. Herbert, David, Elsie, James, Catherine, Frank, Mary & Reuben

There is an Arthur W Rowe who was the son of James Rowe and Clara Trehune born 17 Mar 1902, died 1 Nov 1983 Sandusky, Sanilac. James and Clara lived Elk and Sandusky and were with widower father William in the 1900 Elk census.

Any help is very appreciated and at your convenience.

Hi Kathy,
Thanks to the Michigan Library online database I found a death certificate for William Rowe.

Unfortunately the informant, Wm's daughter Elsie (Rowe) Miller of Peck submitted the names of her parents instead of her paternal grandparents. Also found the death of Wm's wife Catherine Nelmes. Although I can't find their records in Elk County Cemetery.

The certificates are great finds! Many thanks to the library for offering so much online, and for the research offered by Kathy. Any additional information about this family is most welcome.

Hi,
I'm looking for birth and death dates for George and Christina (Harper) Mitchener. They are buried in Moore Twp cemetery, next to Joseph and Mary Mitchener. The dates on their tomb stones are: George 1860-1932 and Christina 1870-1926. Also, do your death records indicate cause of death? Thank you for your help.

I am wondering if someone could send me a copy of the marriage record of James Colham to Leah Wiltfelt 20 Nov 1865. (This may be James Culhane and Rachel Leah Wiltfong. I want to look at a copy of the original, because a person who knows the names can tell if that is what it says, and those who donot know the names will take a educated guess as to what the scriber wrote (because we all know that most were very hard to read).
Thank you Michelle Culhane

Hi Kathy,

I am searching for info/records on my relatives in Sanilac county.

They are Solomon Ballard, b. cir. 1831 and his wife Abigail McDonald, b. cir. 1841 in Canada (or possible Adelaide?) along with their daughter Cora Ballard. Cora was born in 1865 in Michigan.

Abigail is related to Harriet Ann McDonald who married to John Munro in the area.

Both Solomon and Abigail seem to be disappeared from Sanilac county for some reason after they have Cora. They are not listed in either 1870 or 1880 U.S. censuses in Sanilac county.

But I found one record of where Cora was, and it is in 1880 U.S. Census that she stayed with the (James & Emma as her cousins-in-law) Simmons in Marion, Sanilac county. Apparently she did not live with her parents.

Is it possible that Solomon and Abigail died for some reason? Perhaps someone can look up for newspaper for obituraries on them from 1865 to 1870? Possibly 1871 to 1880? That would be very helpful.

Thank you very much.

Hello Kathy,

I am another who has been looking for the 1880 Bridgehampton census for my Fay family, but have read today that those pages seem to be missing. Luckily, I found the younger generation moved to St. Clair County where they died in the 1900s. I wondered if they moved due to the big fires in 1881.

My Israel Fay came in from Ontario and is in the 1860 and 1870 censuses, but is gone after that. Tho, his widow, Eveline is in the area longer. Eveline is a Webster and their son, my gg grandfather married Catharine Leitch, dau of Neil Leitch in 1859 in Sanilac Co.

Do they appear on the 1873 atlas maps, if residents are shown?

Is there any chance there may be a cemetery listing for Israel and Eveline Fay in the area?

I have been attempting to do my family genealogy since last Sept 2010. This year while cleaning behind an old shed I have found what must have been a dump at one time. I retrieved from this pile several old prescription bottles with Sadie Irvine's name on it and her doctor, Dr. Gerald L. Groate B.S. M.D from Deckerville with phone number 376-3100. I checked on Ancestry.com and found 1920s census with Sadie or Sarah Irvine and her husband, William Irvine.
After talking to a neighbor that has lived here all his life, he advised that Sadie Irvine and William Irvine were parents to John Roy McLean who we had bought his estate after he passed away.
I was also advised that one of our old sheds was a grainery at one time. So as I continue to dig and find bottles, etc in my yard, more questions come to my mind like how did these people live, and what were they like? I have dates of birth and more information if you know something or need more information.
Your help would be terrific as I am unsure how to piece this puzzle together any further. Thanks

Hi,

I have found her grandfather "Chas Joshua Green" who married "Ella Pomeroy" on Nov. 19, 1882 or 1883 (looks like typo possible on the form i found it on) (a State of MI Sanilac County Marriage Register). It does not show any parent info on the register and I wondered if there may have been another form filed with Sanilac County that showed parent info or even a possible newspaper at the time that published info about the marriage. I have been able to locate Ella Pomeroys family but not Chas Joshua Green's parents or his exact birthdate or siblings. Would you be able to find anything by looking at the Court records directly?

In many of her Censuses she states being born in England. Is there anywhere else I can find something eg. marriage of John A Wright to Mary Ann Hyde in Lexington Sanilac Michigan. John and Catherine are my husband's Great Great Grandparents.

Well, it seems this site might be abandoned since last two posts were spammers. But, on the off chance the blog is still good, I am curious what newspapers were around Brown City in Jan of 1980. Specifically, I am trying to find if the Joseph Buie who died in Jan of 1980 is the same Joseph Buie to whom I am related. Hoping someone published an obituary in one of the papers in the area.

When I search online I seem unsuccessful at finding which papers served the area. Thanks to anyone who is reading that has an answer... failing this I guess I will track down the library and call them. Hopefully, they can help. I guess the internet has not replaced the Librarian's yet.

I had to take some classes there to become Library Director and had a great time there. I have searched and search and never found a Petoskey stone.

Hello Ma'am. I'm Steve, direct decent of Robert then Nathan and finally Albert McClure. June McClure-Swoffer is the daughter of Albert. All were of Croswell Mi., Sanilac Co. Thanks to B. Ake, my new found cousin, I have obtained a lot of historical info such as Mi. VOLUNTEER CAVALRY REGT or Custers Brigade for example to which Nathan served. Specifically, I'm searching for old images of McClures, Swoffer, Surbrook and Gardners of the Croswell Sanilac area. Any images sent electronically to ssa.alexander@gmail.com would be forever cherished. I' m not asking for original separation. Perhaps contact me for possible flash drive transfers 'copy file from scan HD device'? I remember Croswell as a boy and the folks - wonderfull. I thank you in advance.

Hello
I'm looking for any info. on John Heering Sr. husband to Eunice. They had a grocery store that eventually moved to PH by 1917. The names of Jeddo and Lexington and something called the "compo" are familiar to me in relation to where the store might have been started. Is there any geneology or Heering in this area? Decendants are now in PH and Marysville. Thank you
